Interpol co-ordinated arrest of fleeing Maina

Abdulrasheed Maina

Fresh facts have emerged on how fleeing Abdulrasheed Maina, erstwhile Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, was arrested in a town in Niger Republic by security operatives on Monday.
Maina, who is facing a 12-count money laundering charge leveled against him and a firm by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),  has not been attending trial since the September 29, 2020 proceedings and was believed to have jumped bail, a development that prompted Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja to order Senator Ali Ndume, his surety, to be remanded last Monday.
A security source told Global Patriot Newspapers Online that Interpol Nigeria sent out its Red Alert on Maina which automatically activated the security agencies of neighboring countries and led to the arrest of Maina.
He said that the operation that led to the arrest of Maina was a joint effort between the security agencies of Niger Republic, Nigerian anti-corruption officials and Interpol agents.
Maina, he continued, will still be with Interpol till he is returned to detention in Nigeria awaiting the next adjourned date for his case.
The EFCC is alleging that Maina used the account of the firm for money laundering to the tune of about N2 billion, part of which he used to acquire landed properties in Abuja.
Senator Ndume was ordered detained when he could not produce Maina, but the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted the Borno South Senator bail.
Justice Abang, in a ruling, said he chose to grant the senator bail based on his record of good behaviour before the court, notwithstanding that the other grounds of his bail application failed.
The judge granted bail to the senator pending the hearing and determination of Ndume’s appeal filed at the Court of Appeal to challenge Monday’s order sending him to jail for his inability to produce the fleeing Maina.
