A letter to America By Dr Nelson Aluya

Dear fellow Americans,

We, the Nigerian American Public Affairs Committee USA (NAPAC-USA), are compelled to issue a passionate call for unity in the face of hatred and violence. The recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump is a stark reminder of the destructive power of hateful rhetoric and the need for collective action. We must disavow hate in all its forms, both in speech and on social media, and work towards a more inclusive and respectful discourse.

The history of political violence in America is long and troubling, with at least 15 direct assaults on U.S. presidents, presidents-elect, and presidential candidates resulting in five deaths. This toxic climate perpetuates a cycle of division and hostility, undermining our democracy and threatening the very fabric of our society. As a committee dedicated to engaging, informing, and educating the public, especially those of African descent, we recognize the urgent need for peaceful and constructive participation in the political process.

We must recognize that our words have power and that divisive rhetoric can serve as catalysts for violence. We must tone down our language and instead embrace respectful dialogue and civil engagement. We must create a culture where every citizen feels empowered to express their political views without fear of retribution or harm. We are all Americans, and our diversity is our strength. Let us come together to build a brighter future, founded on the principles of unity, respect, and the unwavering commitment to the democratic process.

Join us in this critical endeavor, and let us shape a better tomorrow for ourselves and for generations to come. Together, we can create a society where every voice is heard, every perspective is valued, and every individual can thrive. Let us choose to be the change we seek and work towards a future that is just, equitable, and peaceful for all. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great nation.
