Hundreds of young members of main Shia Muslim sect are protesting on the streets of the major cities of Kaduna and Kano, residents have confirmed, Tuesday.

Followers of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) are protesting at what they describe as harsh treatment by security operatives in recent days.

The encounter with security operatives followed allegations that IMN members had attempted to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, Saturday in Zaria.

Bu Tuesday afternoon, many businesses remained closed as people stayed indoors to avoid trouble, a local journalist said.

Security operatives have, meanwhile, been stationed in strategic locations in Kaduna city centre, he added.
