Victor Attah International Airport set for first international flight to Accra

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced that the first international flight from Victor Attah International Airport will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

According to a press release issued on April 28, the historic flight will depart Uyo for Kotoka International Airport. The service will be operated by the state’s airline, Ibom Air, with a return flight scheduled for Sunday, May 3.

“This maiden international flight represents a significant milestone in our effort to expand aviation capacity, improve global connectivity, and position Akwa Ibom as a preferred destination for tourism and investment,” the government said.

The development follows the upgrade of the airport to international status, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The state government added that it has made “concerted investments to put in place all required technical and infrastructural facilities” to support international operations.

Officials described the flight as the beginning of a new phase for the state’s aviation sector. “While this maiden flight signals the commencement of international operations from Uyo, the official opening of the new terminal building and full commercial flight schedules will be announced in due course,” the statement noted.

The government also expressed appreciation to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for his role in making the project a reality.

“We express our profound appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief for granting approval, and to the Honourable Minister of Aviation for his efforts in ensuring the realisation of this vision,” the statement added.

It further acknowledged the contributions of former governors in developing the aviation sector. “The Government and people of Akwa Ibom State appreciate the pioneering roles of past leaders and remain committed to the sustained development of the aviation ecosystem for economic growth,” it said.

The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah.
