Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has commissioned 1 Km flyover project at Ikot Oku Ikono, Uyo in Akwa Ibom, and prayed God to give Governor Udom Emmanuel a successor that would continue with the development strides in the state.
Chief Obasanjo, who said this Friday, noted that, having a good successor was even more important than having a successful administration, since a good succession plan is part of the success of any government.
According to him, “your success does not stop with your economic and social development efforts for your people; but it would be measured by your succession because success without a good successor is hollow.
“I pray and pray again that you would have a good successor”.
He praised Governor Emmanuel for not failing him, and those who supported his second term ambition, and for not disappointing the people of the state who voted him to return to office in 2019.
Chief Obasanjo further described the I Km flyover constructed by the state government as a project worth celebrating anywhere stressing that, the governor was adept in managing resources because his previous background before becoming the governor had put him in good stead.
He sad, he was a lucky man to have the flyover built along Olusegun Obasanjo Way, a road previously named after him in 2006 by the Victor Attah administration.
Earlier, Gov Emmanuel said the execution of the project was not a show of affluence but prudence in the management of resources.
He explained that, the last federation account meeting of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), was a little more than $1 billion shared to more than 200 million Nigerians.
“When people see us commission projects like this, they think we have money. We don’t because it is now extremely difficult for some governors to pay salaries. So, we are not celebrating excess wealth but a result of creativity,” he said.
The Governor also promised to award contracts for the reconstruction of adjourning roads and bye – passes damaged by diverted vehicular traffic while work on the flyover was ongoing in the past two years.
The governor also said with the coming dry season, government would kick-start the inauguration of more projects such as; Ikot Ekpene-Uyo Road and Eket remodelling projects.
Commissioner for works, Prof. Eno Ibanga had also explained that the flyover project commenced on July 15, 2019 and since it was billed to be completed in two years, the state had even surpassed the deadline because COVID-19 had disrupted work for several months.
