Members of Rapid Response Squad, Nigeria Immigration Service, pass out; Urged to be good ambassadors

Graduates of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Command and Staff College of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Sokoto, who passed out on Thursday, November2, 2021 have been urged to be good Ambassadors of the Service and of the Nation by showing commitment and dedication to their duties.

In his speech at the graduation ceremony of the Squad, the Acting Commandant of the College, CIS CE Okafor (Ph.D) told the graduands that their primary responsibility is to secure the borders of the country, which is crucial to the economic wellbeing of the nation.

He said that the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as well as the Acting Comptroller General of Immigration Service (ACGIS), Isah Jere Idris expects a lot from the Squad, reminding them that they were chosen from among the best, which makes them “the best of best.”

CIS Okafor also reminded the Squad that the ACGIS had on assumption of duty on September 10, 2021, promised Nigerians the Service would evolve new and functional strategies for effective border management, pointing out that their training, even in the face of scarce resources was one of such strategies and urged them not to let the CGIS down.

He also noted that the success of the NIS’ RRS, Border Corps and Border Drill would put paid to the clamour for the establishment a National Border Guard, which, if established will be made up of officers and men like them, stressing that they should, through their excellent performance, prove the point that they are capable of guarding and protecting the nation’s borders more than any other agency, given adequate resources.

The Acting Commandant equally urged the leadership of the NIS to see the Border Corps, Border Drill and RRS of the Service as the new phase of border management, stressing that given adequate attention these units would be capable of tackling the contemporary migration challenges confronting the country, especially with the backing of the nation’s military.

He noted that establishment of another security agency to perform the same duties that these units of the NIS have been well trained to perform would be needless duplication in the face of dwindling economic fortunes and would be against the recommendations of the Steve Oronsanya Panel Report that agencies whose functions overlap should be merged or scrapped.

The Comptroller, Kebbi State Command, IB Omar represented the Comptroller General to review the parade and conveyed the good will message of the CGIS. Some other leaders of the NIS were also present at the passing out ceremony that took place at the College’s premises.
