…Says Caretaker committee is a department in Abia Government House
The Barrister Julius Abure-led national executive of the Labour Party (LP) has described as illegal, unconstitutional, mischievous, a charade and a waste of Abia State people’s time and money, an expanded stakeholders’ meeting convened by the state’s Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, in Umuahia.
Insisting that Otti and all those who converged in the state for the meeting have no power within the Party Constitution, the Electoral Act and the Constitution of Nigeria to convene any such meeting, a statement by Obiora Ifoh, LP’s National Publicity Secretary said, consequently, “the so-called caretaker committee set up by the Governor of Abia State …. can best be described as a department in Abia Government House.”
The LP, in the statement, further said that it is also shocked to note that “the so-called chairman of the caretaker committee is not a registered member of the Party” but someone who “surfaced during the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign to assist Peter Obi in his campaign.”
Pointing out that there is no vacuum in its leadership, the party challenged Gov. Otti to produce any official communication to him from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that raised any objection to the conduct of its Anambra State Convention, insisting that there is no such communication to it as a party to that effect.
The LP, therefore, stressed that the premise on which Governor Otti called the stakeholders meeting “is not only faulty but mischievous,” noting that there is no organ in the constitution of the Party known as expanded stakeholders which could hold a meeting such as was held in Umuahia.
