The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in Gombe State has continued to harvest into its fold new members from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The latest entrant is the Gombe Local Government Auditor of the PDP, Hon. Mahmud Mohammed Wafa, who has pledged his loyalty to the NNPP, a party that has witnessed steady growth in membership recently.
A fortnight ago, a former State lawmaker and a Local Government party chairman dumped the PDP for the NNPP among many other top shots who had followed earlier. The NNPP now has no fewer than three members in the State House of Assembly.
Mahmud Mohammed Wafa joined the NNPP on Tuesday, the day the PDP flagged off its campaign for the 2023 election in Balanga Local Government Area of the State.
He disclosed his defection while speaking with journalists after his meeting with the NNPP Gubernatorial candidate in the state, Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki in his Abuja residence.
He said he joined the NNPP to rescue the state from the All Progressives Congress, APC-led government which he said has downgraded the state to a hopeless situation.
According to him, “Looking at the present debauched situation, we need to put heads together to rescue the state from the APC led-government and the PDP has been in disarray and in confusion since its primary election in March last year, so it can’t give us the leadership we want.
“It’s obvious with his track records and humility, Mailantarki will provide better leadership in the state compared to those in APC and PDP, and NNPP is the only platform that we can leverage to stabilise the state beyond 2023″, he stated.
Since the onset of serious politicking towards the 2023 general election, prominent politicians particularly from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition PDP have been trooping to the opposition NNPP in Gombe state pointing towards a possible major upset in the upcoming governorship polls.
