Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal abandons PDP, joins APC

Zamfara State’s Governor Dauda Lawal has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the State Government announced in a press release on Monday.

The statement said the decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders, elders, stakeholders, and supporters across the state. It highlighted ongoing internal crises, leadership disagreements, and unresolved structural issues within the PDP at both national and state levels as reasons for the move.

Governor Lawal emphasised that his top priority remains peace, security, and development of Zamfara State. According to the release, aligning with the APC will provide greater unity, stability, and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government to advance the state’s progress.

The final deliberation on the defection reportedly took place at Government House, Gusau, with the Deputy Governor, senior officials, and key political figures in attendance.

Governor Lawal expressed gratitude to PDP members and supporters for their past support but noted that the party’s ongoing crises made the defection necessary to ensure good governance and effective delivery of democratic dividends.

By joining the APC, he pledged to focus on unity, security, development, and collaboration with the Federal Government for the benefit of Zamfara citizens.

The government called on all residents, political leaders, and supporters to remain calm and peaceful as the state enters this new political phase.
