Nigeria advances to AFCON semi-final with 1-0 victory over Angola

Nigeria secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by defeating Angola 1-0. Ademola Lookman scored the decisive goal in the 41st minute, capitalizing on a pass from Moses Simon. Despite a strong defensive effort from Angola, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made crucial saves to deny scoring opportunities.

The opening goal unfolded as Moses Simon navigated past a defender, entered the box, and set up Ademola Lookman for a precise finish. Before Nigeria took the lead, Angola’s Mabululu had a glancing header saved by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali in the fourth minute.

Reigning CAF Player of the Year Victor Osimhen had two attempts on goal, but luck eluded him in finding the net. Ademola Lookman’s goal in the 41st minute secured the 1-0 lead for Nigeria at halftime.

In the second half, Osimhen had a goal disallowed after a VAR review confirmed he scored from an offside position. Despite the intense contest, Nigeria held on to secure the 1-0 victory over Angola, advancing to the AFCON semi-final.

While Angola’s hopes of reaching the AFCON semi-final for the first time were dashed, Nigeria will face either South Africa or Cape Verde in the upcoming round.
