Lawmakers at Anambra House of Assembly, on Thursday said the greatest independence gift Nigerians expect from political leaders is honesty as well as transformational and result-oriented policies.
The Lawmakers made the call in separate interviews with our Correspondent in Awka, to felicitate with Nigerians on the 59th Independence Anniversary celebration.
Mr Okechukwu Okoye (Aguata ll) said that Nigeria more than ever before needed leaders with tremendous moral rectitude, authority, patriotism, honesty and selfless service to the country and citizens.
“The aspirations of our founding fathers could only be achieved if our leaders display in words and actions, the sincerity of purpose and strong convictions to improve the living condition and social well-being of the citizenry.
“Our leaders must learn to tell our people the truth at all times so as not to mislead them. Keep them informed about government policies to get their support.
“And our people must learn to own and protect government infrastructure within their vicinity, ” Okoye said.
In his independence message, Dr Pete Ibida (Njikoka ll) said the state of security in the country required adequate funding of security agencies, to put a stop to kidnapping, banditry, Boko Harram attacks and so on.
“It is pertinent and imperative for leaders to ensure socio-economic and political well-being as well as show love and empathy for our country and its citizenry.
“The security of lives and property is key to drive transformation and progress in Nigeria, therefore, government must rise up to the task of sanitising our security system, ” Ibida said.
Also, Mr Emeka Aforka (Orumba North), commended Nigerians for co-existing peacefully as an indivisible people inspite of their diversities.
Aforka urged the federal government to do more in the area of roads especially in the southern part of the country.
“Like in the South-East, many federal roads are dilapidated and abandoned.
“Let’s change the system and have states construct and maintain their roads rather than wait for the federal government as we have been having it in the last 59 years, ” Aforka said.
The lawmaker advised Nigerians to be law abiding and play their part by carrying out their civic responsibilities.
