NLC accuses Akwa Ibom State Governor of failing to fulfil promises to workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State Council, has accused Governor Umo Eno of not fulfilling the promises he made to workers during his election campaign, as outlined in the Workers Charter of Demands.

In a communique issued after an emergency State Executive Council meeting in Uyo, the NLC also said that the state government was displaying a dismissive attitude towards unresolved labor issues.

The meeting, attended by members of the State Administrative Council, Chairmen, and Secretaries of 50 Unions affiliated to the NLC, as well as representatives of the Youth and Women Committee of the Congress in Akwa Ibom State Council, highlighted the dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of labor-related matters.

The NLC expressed disappointment over the administration’s failure to adhere to “The Workers Charter of Demands” presented during Governor Eno’s visit to the Congress. Additionally, the union criticized the government’s reluctance to engage with the labor leadership on critical issues affecting workers in the state.

The communique stated, “SEC bemoaned the look-down attitude of the State Government towards meeting with the leadership of Congress on many germane issues,” including the provision of CNG Mass Transit Buses for workers to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

The NLC also urged the government to honor the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between it and organized labor regarding the Wage Award of ₦35,000 for Akwa Ibom workers, among other communicated concerns.

While acknowledging the administration’s positive efforts in settling pension and gratuity arrears and payment of the 13th-month basic salary to serving workers, the NLC called on Governor Eno to address the demands of organized labor promptly, emphasizing the need for continued industrial harmony in the state.
