The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing maritime decarbonisation, promoting green shipping practices and strengthening marine environmental protection.
The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, gave the assurance during a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Natural Eco Capital Ltd., Dr Eugene Itua, in Lagos.
The meeting focused on initiatives aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner and more environmentally sustainable maritime sector, according to a statement issued on Friday by the agency’s Head of Public Relations, Mr Osagie Edward.
Mobereola said collaboration among government, the private sector and other stakeholders was critical to achieving Nigeria’s environmental sustainability goals.
He also stressed the need for practical and innovative approaches to tackling climate change, protecting the marine environment and enhancing the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
According to him, the proposed initiatives will support the transition to a low-carbon maritime sector and contribute to the sustainable development of the country’s marine and blue economy.
During the meeting, Itua presented the Nigerian Green Shipping Excellence Programme (NGSEP) and the Green Maritime Recognition Scheme (GMRS).
He said the initiatives were designed to promote cleaner technologies, support maritime decarbonisation, attract climate investments and encourage sustainable shipping practices in Nigeria.
