The joint venture (JV) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and Chevron Nigeria Limited has spent a sum of N17bn on various developmental projects in the Niger Delta in the last 10 years.
General Manager, Policy Government and Public Affairs of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr. Deji Haastrup, who made the disclosure in Akure, Ondo State, said the money was specifically spent on programmes in health, education, economic development and local capacity building (which include scholarships for students) and agriculture.
Other projects included medical centres and supplies, school buildings, water, bridges, town halls, housing units, jetties, drains, and roads.
He noted that the renegotiated Global Memorandum of Understanding among the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture, the Delta and Ondo State governments, Egbema-Gbaramatu and Ilaje communities, was signed on March 26, 2016 in Warri, Delta State.
Haastrup said, “The vision of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture is that the GMoU should be owned by all stakeholders in the process and, as such, it would welcome contributions – monetary, technical and administrative – that could come to all the regional development committees, both in the east and west of the Niger Delta, from the government, their agencies, NGOs and well-meaning individuals.”
Meanwhile, the Ilaje Regional Development Committee has applauded the development and implored all stakeholders to adopt the GMoU as a vehicle for socio-economic development of Niger Delta communities.
