A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, banner erected at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium during the presidential declaration by the Minister, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godwill Akpabio, Wednesday, caused pandemonium in Akwa Ibom.

The banner had the inscription: “Peoples Democratic Party, Akwa Ibom State Chapter is in support of His Excellency, Chief Dr. Godswill Akpabio for President in 2023.”

Immediately the APC supporters saw the banner, they became amazed at what an uncommon support given to the former Governor The banner also caused some confusion amongst the crowd.

The display of the banner was considered by some persons around the venue of the declaration rally as a ploy to show that the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel has not done well.

They said that, Governor Emmanuel is also contesting the Presidential position in 2023 under the PDP banner but never consulted the people, even the party in the state but was going around Nigeria to seek support.

A source , who claimed to be a member of PDP confirmed to newsmen at the venue of the rally, that their action was because Governor Emmanuel failed to consult the party in the state before embarking on contesting for the presidency.

“Charity must always begin at home,” he stated, arguing that “how can Governor Emmanuel be going round the country to consult for a presidential ticket without first informing Akwa Ibom people?”

Meanwhile, Senator Godswill Akpabio has formally joined the presidential race, promising to unite Nigeria throughout his tenure.

He made the declaration at Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium on Wednesday recounting achievements he recorded in public life from his time as Commissioner till date.

Akpabio assured Nigerians that, he would consolidate on president Buhari’s achievements by completing the second Niger bridge just as he had inaugurated the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) headquarters abandoned for 26 years .

According to him, “you have heard a lot of declarations. This one is very uncommon. I have never seen a politician loved by his people and others across the nation like Godswill Akpabio.”

He said as a first time senator, he was honoured by his colleagues and elected the Minority Leader adding that he was determined to bring the nation together

He paid a glowing tribute to president Muhammadu Buhari for showing integrity in the affairs of the nation especially in the fight against corruption .

Akpabio insisted that the fight against corruption would continue to ensure that the nation is rid of corrupt tendencies and accelerate the pace of development .

“My presidential declaration is backed by representatives of major political blocks in the country especially, the North , west and south East”, he stated acknowledging the representative of Northern Youths Forum who had bought the APC Presidential Nomination Form for him as a mark of solidarity and support .
