No fewer than 753 recruits Constables of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday, passed out in Sokoto State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recruits include 329 constables from Sokoto state, 256 constables from Kebbi and 168 constables from Zamfara under the Sokoto Zone 10 Command.
NAN reports that only seven women from the zone made the list of recruitments.
Addressing the personnel, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba said the event took place simultaneously at 15 other Police training institutions across the country.
Baba, represented by Mr. Bello Dalijan, Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10, Sokoto, said the ceremony represented another huge step in the drive by the Federal Government to address the manpower gap in the Police in the country.
“This is to change the narrative of policing by addressing the age-long manpower gap that has been inhibiting optimal police service delivery in the country.
“The Federal Government’s policy of recruiting 10,000 Police constables annually is not only unprecedented in the history of law enforcement in Nigeria, it clearly confirms the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari to restore the lost police primacy.”
He added that the recruitment projected the determination of the Federal Government to address unemployment which accentuated rate of crimes.
“Indeed, I am elated to note that shortly after this 2020 passing out, another set of 10,000 recruits will be resuming training under the 2021 batch of the exercise,” he added.
The IGP, while congratulating the new constables, assured citizens that a new police was being evolved and it would be one to protect with courage and serve the society with compassion.
Earlier, Mr Kabir Muhammad, Commandant Police Training School, Sokoto, emphasised the need for more women to join the police force.
According to Muhammad, there are only seven females out of the total figure of 753 new recruits constables from the whole zone.
“The need therefore to have more women joining the force, from our catchment area into the services of the Nigeria Police Force cannot be over emphasised.
“However, the gentlemen standing before you are qualified and patriotic Nigerians carefully selected from various communities within the three states.
“They have been adequately trained and consequently found worthy in character and discipline to serve as officers in the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
Some dignitaries at the event include the Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, Mr Mohammed Gumel, representatives of the Sultan, Civil Defence, Correctional Service, Immigration and Fire Service among others.
