Ronaldo struggles as Portugal held by DR Congo

Portugal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign started off on a disappointing note after they were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo, in their Group K opener on Tuesday.

Roberto Martinez’s men made a dream start when midfielder João Neves headed home Pedro Neto’s cross in the sixth minute to give the Europeans an early advantage.

Portugal appeared in control and dominated possession throughout much of the contest, but they struggled to create meaningful chances against a well-organised DR Congo defence.

The African side gradually grew into the match and deservedly found an equaliser in first-half stoppage time. Arthur Masuaku delivered a dangerous cross into the box and Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa rose unchallenged to head past Diogo Costa for DR Congo’s historic first World Cup goal.

Despite enjoying 75 per cent possession, Portugal failed to turn their dominance into goals. Their only shot on target throughout the match remained Neves’ early header.

Much attention was focused on captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who made history by appearing in his sixth World Cup finals. However, the 41-year-old endured a frustrating evening as DR Congo’s disciplined defence kept him quiet for long periods.

Ronaldo came closest midway through the second half when he twice connected with low crosses from substitute Francisco Conceição, but both efforts drifted narrowly wide of the post.

DR Congo also threatened to take all three points. Cedric Bakambu caused problems for Portugal’s defence and came close to scoring on more than one occasion as the African side looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

The result marks a significant achievement for DR Congo, who are making their World Cup debut under their current name after competing as Zaire in 1974, where they lost all three group matches.

For Portugal, the draw will raise concerns about their attacking efficiency despite boasting several world-class players.

Portugal will face Uzbekistan in their second Group K match, while DR Congo take on Colombia as both teams continue their quest for a place in the knockout stages.
