Cross River Governor receives two new aircraft to improve air travel, boost tourism

The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, has taken delivery of two new Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft to address the persistent problem of flight delays and cancellations affecting Calabar and other parts of the state.

Governor Otu, in a statement he personally signed and shared with journalists on Friday, said the acquisition is part of his administration’s efforts to improve transport infrastructure and make the state more attractive to tourists and investors.

The official reception for the aircraft took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The Governor was joined by his wife and other important guests at the event.

Describing the move as “a long-overdue leap into the future,” Governor Otu said the aircraft will help connect Cross River better with the rest of the country and support economic growth.

“These aircraft are more than just machines; they are tools for commerce, cultural exchange, and hope,” he said. “Our people and visitors have suffered for too long due to disrupted air travel. Today marks the beginning of a better travel experience.”

He added that the aircraft will be officially commissioned by the Ministry of Aviation on 12 August 2025.

With top tourist attractions such as Carnival Calabar, Obudu Ranch Resort, and several ecotourism sites, Governor Otu said better air access is key to the state’s growth. “Accessibility must no longer be a challenge,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Aviation, Capt Imah Utum, said the new aircraft bring the state’s total fleet to four. He noted that two Boeing 747s earlier acquired under former Governor Ben Ayade are currently operated by Aero Contractors.

The new Bombardier CRJ1000 jets will be managed by ValueJet Airlines for now, while the state continues working to secure its own Air Operator Certificate for an independent airline.

“This move will boost tourism, build investor confidence, and open Cross River to greater business opportunities,” Capt Utum said. “No economy grows in isolation, and these aircraft will make sure we are part of national and international discussions.”

Former Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edem Duke, praised Governor Otu for the initiative. He called it a “game-changing intervention” that will change how people view Calabar.

“This single decision will make Calabar more accessible and create new opportunities in hospitality, agriculture, export, and more,” he said.

The aircraft are expected to begin operations soon, making Cross River more connected and competitive.
