A Benin based legal practitioner, Afolabi Olayiwola Tuesday said the manner and approach adopted by the secret police in Nigeria was wrong in the arrest of three judges recently.
He made this known to GPNews as reaction continued to trail the arrest of the judges by the Department of State Service,
Though he was quick to say that nobody was above the law and that the secret services had a duty to do their jobs, he added that they should have been more civilised in their approach.
Afolabi who also queried the huge sums of money found in the possession of the Judges, urged them to seek redress in court if they feel that their privacy has been invaded.
Afolabi said “The manner with which the DSS approached the matter is very bad. How can you for God’s sake go and ransack the judges’ houses around 2 am in the night?. Imagine if they were with their wives in the bedroom. I am not saying that they should not be investigated. But the way and manner they went about it is very bad
“They can approach them in the morning as they are leaving their homes and as a fact, I am not saying that they are above the law, but the way and manner they went about it is very bad
“Though there are several ways they can go about the arrest, they can go there in the morning as they are leaving home. But they too, if they know that they have no skeletons in their cupboards can even sue the DSS.”
“They can be arrested in the morning like I said before but if they think that their rights have been infringed upon, they can go to court or call a press conference and tell their stories. Again what are they doing with such huge sums of money in their possession?. My point is that the manner and approach is wrong and again no person is above the law.”
