Presidential Support Committee (PSC) and South-East Equity Alliance (SEEA), have called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to cede the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives to the South-East.
The pro-groups are made up of leaders of APC in the South-East.
The call was contained in a statement made available to NAN in Umuahia by Mr Chamberlain Adiaso, the South East Zonal Coordinator of PSC, on Thursday.
Adiaso expressed the group’s unalloyed support for the emergence of Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, the House of Representatives Member-elect for Okigwe South as the Speaker of the 9th Assembly.
Adiaso stated: “It is injustice for the South West to produce the Vice President and national leader of the party and still want to lay claim to the speakership.”
The coordinator further stated that “Nwajiuba, being a detribalised Nigerian, should be considered for the position so that he can become a rallying point for the whole APC in the South- East zone.”
He pointed out that the people of South-East assisted President Muhammadu Buhari to get 25 per cent votes in the 2019 elections.
He also noted that zoning was in line with Buhari’s promise to run an inclusive government.
“Nwajiuba, as a speaker, would ensure the independence of the legislature and harmonious relationship with the executive and judicial arms of government.
“We are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to allow the people of the South-East to produce the next Speaker of the 9th Assembly,” he added.
Also, Chief Nwoha Amaechi, the spokesman for SEEA and former Speaker, Imo House of Assembly, stated that Nwajiuba’s cognate experience in law making qualified him to be the Speaker.
Nwoha called on the APC and Nigerians to support the clamour for the emergence of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Igbo extraction for fairness and equity.
