When you don the jersey of a country, you wear it with pride cloaked with patriotism and determination to bring back glory. I can’t understand our present crop of Super Eagle players. It seems these ones just go for tourism and are content with having a spot on the roster. No zeal. No passion. They don’t even want to stress themselves running too much on the field.
Look at the qualifying match against Ghana we played right on Nigerian soil. We didn’t play like we had anything at stake. It was as if the game was an inter house sports competition. Then, the match against Portugal few days ago. I thought Portugal told us it was a friendly match…. there was nothing friendly about the match. They showed us shege because we flew all the way to Lisbon unprepared without a solid formation.
I miss the golden era. When MEN DEY!!!!! Talk about the likes of Rashidi Yekini, Sam Okwaraji, Garba Lawal, Peter Rufai Haruna, Odegbami, Adeshina, Iorfa, Amokachi, Jay Jay, Amuneke, Nwankwo, Tijani, Finidi, Taribo, Yobo, Enyeama and co. Compare these names to the present squad we have and tell me if they come close.
I reiterate my stance that I am happy Nigeria did not qualify for this World Cup. Attending international competitions is one thing but who shall go for us? Whom shall we send to make us proud? As it is, I don’t think we have a serious team. The federation also has a major role to play but I’ll address that in a subsequent post. Thanks for reading.
