The construction of a water embarkment project to control incessant flooding in Goronyo local government area of Sokoto state by governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has restored farming activities in the area, Honorable Abdulwahab Yahaya, chairman of Goronyo local government, has said.
Goronyo Dam, being one of the largest in West Africa has a reservoir that covers 8,000 hectares and extends some 119km upstream from the Dam. It also has 15 km-supply canal that carries water from the Dam and distributes same through several hundreds of Kilometers of secondary and tertiary canals to surrounding villages in the local government.
Yahaya added that, aside controlling the yearly disasters orchestrated by the overflowing of the Dam, over 50 people-oriented projects have so far been completed with others ongoing in the eleven council wards of the local government by the governor Tambuwal administration.
Speaking shortly after taking newsmen round some of the projects, Yahaya added that, the 1.5 million litter Semi Water project at Goronyo town, executed by the government has helped in providing portable drinking water to the locals.
At the flood control site, Honorable Yahaya said, “the 7-kilometer flood control embarkment was executed in two phases at the cost of 38 million naira.”
Describing the project as a beacon of light in the desert of despair for the locals, Yahaya, added that the project has helped to stop “floods from washing away farmlands and disrupting human activities.”
The local government chairman further showed other projects executed by the state to include, “upgrading and expansion of multi-million-naira Juma’at Central Mosque within the metropolis, renovation of two blocks of six classrooms and an office for the Headmaster at the Nana Aisha Islamiyya school, a block of three classrooms at Abdullahi Islamiyya Primary School, Women Development Center amongst others.”
Yahaya also listed a stretch of road linking villages of Mariri, Illela, Huda Gare and Godon Mata among the projects executed.
In Rabah and Wurno local government areas of Sokoto State, the storyline is no different, as the two council chairmen pointed out several projects being executed by the Tambuwal led government.
Giving testimony to the execution of projects in Rabah, the local government chairman, Honourable, Yahaya Abdullahi Gandi said the state government has executed commendable people-oriented projects in the area.
