Terrorism: Gombe PCRC begins campaigns to secure schools

Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, while declaring a one day workshop on Safe Schools Initiative said Government will not fold its arms and watch its schools fall prey to terrorists, kidnappers and other criminals whose aim is to destroy, and create chaos in the society.

Speaking through the State Chairman of the Gombe State Teachers Service Commission, Mr. Johnny Yari, Dankwambo stated that the Government had always placed its highest priority on the education sector, as such, the security of lives and property of students and teachers must be adequately taken care of.

He said his Government had already taken measures in securing its schools and would do more in ensuring that students learn in peaceful atmosphere while teachers teach in conducive environment.

Speaking earlier, the Gombe State Chairman of the PCRC, Ambassador Wada Abubakar Sadiq said the programme was initiated due to the need to take precautionary measures on issues of safety of students and teachers as regards fire incidences, road safety measures as well as the kidnappings and activities of terrorists.

He said the programme aims to sensitize people especially teachers and heads of public and private schools who have become relaxed on security issues of their students while in schools.

In a key note address, the Commandant, 301 Artillery Regiment, Gombe, Colonel Dan-Umar Suleiman, said there was need for synergy between security agencies as well as members of the public in combating activities of terrorists and kidnapers.

He decried the failure of security systems in schools and called for the immediate resuscitation of security committees in all schools.
