Midnight shootout in Akwa Ibom: Police foil robbery, kill one suspect

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Akwa Ibom State Command, overpowered armed robbers in a fierce gun battle in the early hours of Saturday, leading to the death of one gang member.

The incident happened around 2:25am along 1745 Hotel Road in the Mbiokporo area. According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, the officers were on routine weekend patrol as directed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, when they received a distress call about an ongoing robbery operation.

Acting swiftly, the patrol team rushed to the scene. On arrival, the armed suspects opened fire on the officers. A gun duel followed, during which one of the robbers was shot. He was taken to the hospital but was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The police recovered one locally-made pistol, one expended cartridge and two live cartridges from the suspect.

DSP Timfon John stated that a full-scale manhunt is now underway to track down the fleeing gang members and recover their weapons. She urged members of the public to assist by providing useful information that could aid the investigation.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in the state.
