Tinubu presides over FEC meeting; Directs mandatory procurement of CNG-powered vehicles; Adjourns to Tuesday

In line with his commitment to ensure energy security, drive utility, and cut high fuel costs, President Bola Tinubu has directed the mandatory procurement of compressed-natural-gas (CNG)-powered vehicles by all government ministries, departments, and agencies.

The President’s directive is also in furtherance of Nigeria’s effort to transition to cleaner energy as CNG-enabled vehicles have been adjudged to produce lower emissions, even as they present a more affordable alternative for Nigerian energy consumers.
Addressing members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the State House on Monday, President Tinubu affirmed that there is no turning back in the energy reforms initiated by his administration.
“This nation will not progress forward if we continue to dance on the same spot. We have the will to drive the implementation of CNG adoption across the country, and we must set the example as public officials in leading the way to that prosperous future that we are working to achieve for our people. It starts with us, and in seeing that we are serious, Nigerians will follow our lead,” the President stated.
He further directed the rejection of all memos brought by members of FEC seeking the purchase of traditional petrol-dependent vehicles, tasking the affected members of the Council to go back and diligently seek value-driven procurements of CNG-compliant vehicles.
“The President remains committed to effectively harnessing the nation’s gas potential, alleviating the burden of high transportation costs on the masses while enhancing the standard of living of all Nigerians,” a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity) stressed.

Meanwhile, the FEC ended its meeting on Monday, with plans to resume discussions Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in order to wrap up deliberations. President Tinubu led the FEC meeting, which convened seven weeks after its last session, with almost all members present.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, clarified the reason for extending the meeting to a second day, stating that significant decisions were made during Monday’s session. He mentioned that the outcomes of these decisions would be disclosed on Tuesday.

“The meeting is not yet over. The Council meeting will continue tomorrow. Therefore, there will be no press briefing today (Monday). A lot of important decisions have been made, and the results will be shared with you tomorrow (Tuesday). Thank you very much,” said the Minister.

The previous Council meeting, held on March 25, 2024, approved the construction of 28 roads and bridges nationwide, totaling over N1.2 trillion in value.

In the latest session on Monday, May 13, President Tinubu oversaw the swearing-in of two additional Federal commissioners of the National Population Commission, Fasuwa Johnson and Dr. Amid Tadese Raheem, representing Ogun and Osun states respectively. They took their oaths of office at 12:15 pm in the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, following the reading of their abbreviated citations.

President Tinubu had previously appointed 20 federal commissioners to the National Population Commission on November 8th, with nine of them serving a second term in office.
