Residents of Uyo metropolis in Akwa Ibom suffer persistent flooding from torrential rains, and are now crying out to the State government for help.

Some of the areas seriously affected by the ravaging flood are: Idoro road by Berger junction, Atiku Abubakar Way, Ikot Oku Ikono by the new fly – over and Udo Umanah street axis.

Others are: Nkemba area with the adjoining streets completely submerged, Sonubros Street by Nung Oku leading to the Dakkada Towers and Uria Ekpa/Itu roads.

A resident, Mr. Udomiso while raising the alarm on Monday said, he lost household items to flood at the weekend due to flood water that entered his compound.

He said, “I have lived in this compound in the last 5 years and have never experienced the kind of flood that flooded this compound at the weekend.

“It started by 9 am and lasted for 7 hours, thereby turning the area including my compound into a river, nobody could either come in or go out for several hours.”

Ms Udeme Ekpo, who also spoke to this reporter on her experience on Sonubros Street at Nung Oku, said she could not access her compound when she was returning home that eventful day.

She said her car was completely submerged while she stood up inside her vehicle to avoid water soaking her and the wares.

But the Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Sir Charles Udoh said he was not aware of flood situations in some of the affected areas of the metropolis.

Sir Udoh was quoted to have said that, “drainage control projects are on going in the state but the spots mentioned were not included.

“I am not informed of these axes being ravaged by flood. Once I have official report from them, government would act accordingly.”
