Nigeria Labour Congress suspends protest after day one success, issues fresh ultimatum

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the suspension of its planned protest scheduled for Wednesday, citing “overwhelming success on day one” of the protest.

The decision was made in a statement released by NLC President Joe Ajaero and acting General Secretary Ismail Bello on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

Despite the suspension of street protests, the NLC has declared that nationwide action will continue on Wednesday, February 28, through simultaneous press conferences across all states of the federation, including the National Headquarters.

In the statement, the NLC issued a fresh 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, expiring on March 13, for the full implementation of all agreements reached on October 2, 2023, along with other demands presented during Tuesday’s nationwide protest.

Tuesday’s protest, which aimed to highlight the growing hardships and insecurity in the country, saw workers, civil society affiliates, and State Councils participating across various cities. However, official activities remained largely unaffected as civil servants, banks, and other enterprises continued with their operations.

The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to defending and promoting the interests of Nigerian workers and the downtrodden masses. It also stated its readiness to decide on further courses of action if the government fails to comply with the demands within the stipulated timeframe.

The NLC’s decision to suspend protests after day one signals a strategic move to consolidate gains achieved while maintaining pressure on the government to address the issues raised by the labour union.
