NGO urges govt. to promote professional policing in Nigeria

Mr. Obinna Nwagbara, Chief Executive Officer of Youths and Students Advocates Development Initiative (YSAD) has called on the Nigerian government to resolve the challenges of the Nigeria Police by promoting professional policing.

Nwagbara who made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Aba, said professional police was important to a peaceful and progressive society.

He said that the Police was faced with myriads of challenges including poor funding, unclear operational structures and leadership challenges which government can help it solve.

Nwagbara called for quick attention to the needs of the Nigeria Police to ensure its image is restored to a level of glory greater than what it is now.

“More than one year after ENDSARS, the Federal Government has continued to ignore the issues raised by the protesters, similarly the call for genuine reform of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Federal Government should not be comfortable with the unfriendly relationship that exists between citizens and the law enforcement agencies, especially the police.

“The truth is that the Federal Government of Nigeria should be more interested in funding the police for a better performance’’, he said.

Nwagbara said that if the police is not well taken care of, it would be difficult to instill discipline in the members of the police force.

He therefore called on the Federal Government to start reconditioning the Nigerian society by first reforming the police.

The YSAD CEO also urged the Nigerian Police to discipline erring personnel and enforce its operational rules in order to attract assistance for them.
