Ghanaian born Captain Cecilia Erzuah, who served with the United Nations (UN) Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), was recently honored as the recipient of the 2022 UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.

Abyei is between Sudan and South Sudan in Africa.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, presented the award to Erzuah, at the 2023 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at UN headquarters in New York.

Some heroes who fell in the line of duty in 2022 were equally honored, posthumously, with the award of the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal as part of the activities to mark the Day.

Two Nigerians were among those who died in the line of duty in 2022 who were honored at the ceremony.
