Aba (Abia) Nov. 6, 2024
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said it was targeting more passengers during the 2024 road safety ember month campaign because fatal road accidents claim more passengers than drivers.
The FRSC Chief Route Commander, Unit RS 9.31, Aba, Abia, Mazi Uduma Uduma gave the explanation at the Aba park on Wednesday while addressing passengers.
Uduma spoke at the kickoff of the unit’s 2024 edition of the “Ember Months Safety Campaign” themed “Dangerous Driving, Speak Up, Crashes kill more Passengers than Drivers”.
He warned commercial vehicle passengers to avoid becoming victims of reckless driving by not overlooking, but reporting them on time while traveling.
He said it was important for passengers to speak up because only one driver may die in a fatal vehicle accident but many passengers may face same fate in an accident situation.
Uduma said since he took over Unit RS 9.31 command, the number of recorded accidents in his unit’s coverage area had reduced because of his command’s commitment to discharging their duties on the roads.
He enjoined the passengers to always be alert and complain and report any driving offence to the FRSC through the phone numbers on their flyers for prompt action.
He said that the command was engaging with Aba residents to enlighten them on the need to drive and use the roads safely for their benefit and the benefit of others.
The Coordinator, Special Marshals, Unit 2, Aba, Abia, Mrs. Rosie Chukwu, said they were collaborating with FRSC to enlighten road users on safety of the roads in the ember months campaign.
“The State Governor has tried to fix some roads but for the ones he has not yet fixed, we plead with him to do so to make them safer.
“Bad roads contribute to the rate of accidents recorded but when roads are made better, it reduces accidents. So we plead with the governor to fix important roads not yet fixed”, she said.
The leader of the Hausa Community in Aba, Sarki Bello Shehu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that his community was happy to be visited during the FRSC enlightenment campaign.
“Many of our people are drivers who move from Aba to the North, and we will enlighten them on the FRSC safety guidelines to ensure they go and return safely”, he said.
Shehu said it was important that passengers and drivers were told how to be safe and to make the roads safe for all.
