Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has renamed the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori as the Ken Ule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, in honour of the late activist’s monumental achievements and legacies.
In a press statement made available to Global Patriot Newspapers, by Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah JP, Thursday, the governor remarked that the memories of avatars like the late Saro-Wiwa who fought selflessly for the betterment of society and humanity should not be consigned to oblivion. More so, he reasoned, when such personalities are revered beyond the shores of the country.
Hailing the achievements of the late Saro-Wiwa-especially as the former Sole Administrator of Bonny and the first commissioner for education in Rivers State, Wike recalled with nostalgia, the role of the late Saro-Wiwa in the Niger Delta struggle that eventually consumed him.
“This literary giant must not be left unsung. He was a known and respected environmental activist whose efforts exposed the marginalisation of the Niger Delta and attracted international attention to the region,” Gov Wike concluded.
