Nigeria thrash Ecuador 4-0 to reach FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup knockout round

Nigeria’s Flamingos secured a 4-0 win against Ecuador on Saturday, October 19, 2024, to advance to the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic. The team continued their impressive performance after a 4-1 victory over New Zealand in their first group match.

The match saw both teams create early chances, but Nigeria took the lead in the 28th minute when Shakirat Abidemi Moshood calmly converted a penalty. The Flamingos controlled the game and came back stronger after halftime. In the 54th minute, Chidera Harmony Chidi, the top scorer during the qualification series, doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a goal assisted by Aishat Animashaun.

In the 66th minute, Peace Mary Effiong made it 3-0, giving Nigeria a comfortable cushion. In stoppage time, Chidi provided a brilliant pass to Moshood, who scored her second goal of the match to complete the 4-0 victory.

With two wins from two games, the Flamingos now have six points and sit at the top of their group, guaranteeing their place in the tournament’s knockout stage. They will play their final group match against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
