No fewer than 11 people died in a lone crash at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway on Sunday night.
The accident involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted before falling off the bridge, leaving the passengers trapped inside.
The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, confirmed the incident in a statement released through the command’s spokesperson, Odunsi Afolabi.
According to the statement, officials from the Itori Unit were quickly sent to the scene after the crash was reported.
Ogunjobi explained that all 11 occupants of the vehicle died in the accident because the doors became locked after the impact.
He said the victims included 10 adult men and one adult woman.
FRSC officers, alongside members of the local community, later worked together to remove the bodies from the damaged vehicle. The corpses were taken to the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
The sector commander blamed the crash on driving under the influence of alcohol and overloading.
He also expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and urged motorists travelling on the Abeokuta-Lagos road to be more careful, especially during night journeys.
