Akwa Ibom State Assembly confirms six commissioner-nominees

Hon. Aniekan Bassey, Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly on Wednesday at plenary confirmed six Commissioner nominees sent by Gov. Udom Emmanuel for ratification.

The confirmed nominees are Messrs Bassey Okon,  Offiong Ofor, Aniefiok Nkom, Iniobong Ekong, Bob Emem, and Camillus Umoh.

Our Correspondent reports that the Governor had, on Monday, March 21, forwarded the names of the six nominees to the State House of Assembly for confirmation.

Prior to the confirmation, the nominees had earlier been screened by the Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions and the report of the screening submitted to the House.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee, Mr Victor Ekwere – PDP  (Mkpat Enin), explained that the credentials and other relevant documents of the nominees were screened and that they were interviewed on a wide range of issues, particularly, their areas of specialisation.

He added that the nominees met all constitutional requirements for appointment as Commissioners, as outlined in Section 192 (4) and 106 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

Ekwere commended Governor Emmanuel for selecting men and women of proven integrity for appointment into the State Executive Council and further urged the nominees to give in their best when sworn-in.

Subsequently, the House after interacting with the nominees, considered the Committee’s recommendations and confirmed their appointments as Commissioners and Special Advisers.

The Speaker, Mr Aniekan Bassey, directed the Clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren, to communicate the resolution of the House to the Governor for further action.

Meanwhile, the House has adjourned plenary to reconvene on April 28.
