2022 World Cup: Bukayo Saka shines as England slams Iran 6-2 to make commanding start

Bukayo Saka scored twice in England’s 6-2 Iran rout in their opening group game of the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

It was Gareth Southgate’s youthful side who bossed the game from kick-off but we’re unable to find a way past the resilient Iranians in the opening half an hour.

Borussia Dortmund youngster Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock off a Luke Shaw assist to give England a deserved 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.

Sensational Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka added a second in the 43rd minute before Raheem Sterling got the third to gift England a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

Saka grabbed his brace in the 61st minute to extend the Three Lions lead to 4-0.

A rare Iran attempt beat Jordan Pickford for what will count as a consolation goal in the 63rd minute before substitute Marcus Rashford joined the party in the 71st minute with a strike of his own for 5-1.

Both teams managed a goal apiece in the final minutes, Taremi again had the ball in the net for Iran while Manchester City’s Jack Grealish got on the scoresheet as England secured a 6-2 win over Iran.

Skipper Harry Kane did not get on the scoresheet but will pride in two assists as England made mincemeat of their first Group B opponents at the World Cup.

USA and Wales are the other teams in Group B and will open their campaign by 8pm (Nigerian time).
