The Presidential Candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 Women’s National Football Team, the Flamingos, following their historic victory at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Flamingos defeated Japan 2 – 1 in Saturday’s final in Rabat, Morocco becoming the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
In a congratulatory message posted on his X handle on Saturday shortly after the match, Obi commended the team for raising Nigeria’s flag high on the international stage.
He said that the team had earned a special place in the hearts of Nigerians.
Obi praised the young footballers for their resilience, talent, hard work and determination, describing their achievement as a “moment of immense pride for Nigeria and a demonstration of the potential of the country’s youths”.
He said that their remarkable performance reflected the rewards of discipline, commitment and perseverance, particularly among young people given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.
He said, “Thank you for raising our flag high and bringing immense joy to our nation.
“Your remarkable talent, resilience, hard work and dedication have earned you a special place in the hearts of Nigerians.”
Obi, who was the former Governor of Anambra, further described the victory as evidence of the capacity of Nigerian youths to excel globally when driven by determination, discipline and commitment.
He congratulated the players for their outstanding efforts and expressed optimism about the country’s future.
“You have made our nation proud, and we truly appreciate your outstanding efforts. Congratulations, champions!” he said.
During the final match, Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 39th minute, while Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the advantage shortly after the restart in the 47th minute.
Japan pulled one back through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute but could not overturn Nigeria’s lead.
The triumph capped an impressive campaign in which Nigeria recovered from an opening defeat to Poland to win five consecutive matches, including victories over defending champions North Korea, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil.
