Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has confirmed that he and former governor, now FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, have settled their political differences. He described the reconciliation as a major step towards lasting peace in the state.
In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fubara said the six-month emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu had been difficult but created room for dialogue.
“In the course of the six-month period, Mr. President graciously brokered the peace process with all the parties successfully. Our leader, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and I, as your Governor, have all agreed to bury the hatchet and embrace peace and reconciliation in the best interest of Rivers State,” he said.
President Tinubu had imposed emergency rule in March 2025, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly following a political crisis. The rule was lifted in mid-September, restoring democratic governance.
The peace deal, brokered during the emergency, ended the open conflict between Fubara and Wike that had split political groups in the state.
Fubara’s announcement comes as Rivers continues to manage political tensions between rival camps loyal to him and to his predecessor.
He has, however, assured residents of the state that his administration will continue to work in their best interest.
The governor gave the assurance on Friday shortly after arriving the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Fubara thanked the people for the warm reception he received earlier at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, where a large crowd gathered to welcome him. He described the turnout as a show of love, confidence, and solidarity.
“I’m really humbled by what I saw at the airport. The massive reception was not just a celebration but a reaffirmation of the bond between this government and the people we serve,” he said.
The governor further promised that his administration will continue to work in ways that strengthen this bond. “By the grace of God, we will continue to do those things that have made you love us. We love you, but God loves you more,” he added.
