The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned comments attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
Obi reacted to the controversy in a statement shared on social media on Tuesday, August 11.
He described Fadahunsi’s remarks as “inflammatory” and said they could increase tension and create fear among voters ahead of Saturday’s election.
Obi said lawmakers have a responsibility to promote peace, protect democratic values and encourage unity.
He said it was worrying that a serving senator would make comments that could be seen as threats or could encourage electoral violence.
“Elections are meant to be a celebration of democratic franchise – a peaceful exercise through which citizens freely choose their leaders without intimidation, harassment, or coercion,” Obi said.
He called on Fadahunsi to withdraw the comments and apologise to the people of Osun State.
Obi also urged political leaders, party supporters and other stakeholders to be careful with their words and avoid actions that could threaten peace during the election.
He called on security agencies to monitor inflammatory statements and provide equal protection for voters, election officials and other citizens before, during and after the polls.
“The democratic mandate belongs to the people, and no individual, regardless of status or political office, should attempt to subvert the will of the people through fear or coercion,” he said.
Obi also urged the people of Osun State to remain calm and peaceful as they prepare to vote.
“Getting elections right is a necessary step towards a New Nigeria that is POssible,” he added.
