Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has called on Editors to continue to reinforce their role as bulwarks protecting the nation’s democracy, pointing out what he considers major tasks facing the media chiefs as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Mr. Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, who, on Friday, September 25, 2026, attended the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), holding in Enugu, in his remarks, identified what he thinks Editors must do.
The theme of the Conference, which has hundreds of Editors and other Media icons in attendance, is “The Ballot, The Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” and Obi, in his X platform, said he told the august gathering that editors must, among others, use their privileged position in society to hold politicians accountable, investigate their records and demand excellence from all those contesting to become Excellencies.
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election said further that he urged the Editors to “continue to scrutinise the qualifications and past records of those seeking public office, expose past wrongdoings and ensure that the Nigerian people have access to the information they need to make informed decisions.”
He insisted that “Leaders must exemplify the best values of society.”
According to Obi, the Conference also afforded him the opportunity to interact directly with participants during the question-and-answer session and to listen to their perspectives on the state of the country’s democracy and the role of the media in strengthening it.
He thanked the NGE for inviting him to participate in the Conference that had such veterans as Chief Sam Amuka-Pemu, founder of Vanguard Newspapers, Chief Segun Osoba, former Governor of Ogun State, and Chief Onyema Ugochukwu of the Daily Times fame, and wished them a successful event.
