Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have paid a courtesy visit on His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, on arrival in the state for town hall engagements.
Mr. Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, said in an X post that in his remarks at the occasion, he emphasised the urgent need to unite and secure Nigeria, tackle poverty, create employment, and rebuild confidence in the country.
He said that the Sultan “warmly received us and spoke with the wisdom of a father and national leader. He recalled that he has known me for almost 46 years, since 1980, when I was in my first year at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and has maintained a cordial relationship since then.”
Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) said the Sultan reminded them that leadership comes from God and carries a responsibility for which those entrusted with it “will ultimately be held accountable.”
The highly revered monarch also pointed out to the visiting team “three critical priorities for Nigeria: security, poverty, and employment,” stressing that the country’s “diversity of tribes, tongues, and faiths is part of God’s creation and should be our strength, not our weakness.”
According to Obi’s post, titled “In the Caliphate with a Message of Hope for the Poor and Unity in Nigeria,” the Sultan, pointed out that “We do not seek to Islamise or Christianise anyone. We seek to build a Nigeria where every citizen can live safely, prosper, and have a genuine sense of belonging.”
The NDC presidential flagbearer, thereafter, prayed that the Almighty God will “continue to bless His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, the people of Sokoto State, and our beloved Nigeria.”
