The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving cash rewards to Nigerian athletes in US dollars instead of the local currency, Naira.
The party made its position clear in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi.
President Tinubu recently announced monetary rewards for the Super Falcons, who won their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco, and D’Tigress, who claimed their 5th AfroBasket championship in Côte d’Ivoire.
While the ADC appreciated the President for recognising the efforts of the athletes, the party criticised the use of a foreign currency for the rewards.
“We thank President Tinubu for rewarding our victorious Falcons and D’Tigress,” Abdullahi said. “But it is strange and disappointing that the President continues to show disrespect for the Nigerian currency by giving the rewards in US dollars.”
He ended the message with a reference to the National Orientation Agency (NOA), saying: “Mr. President sir, NOA says, Stop the Naira Abuse.”
