
Akwa Ibom government has said it would establish an emergency medical services centre to address incidences of trauma arising from motor accidents in the state.
This was part of the resolutions of the 2017 State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Udom Emmanuel at Government House on Friday.
Briefing newsmen briefly after the four hours meeting, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, said that the proposed emergency medical unit would be set up in collaboration with the security agencies, paramedics, the fire service and para-military agencies.
The Commissioner added that arrangements have been concluded for the installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras at strategic locations to engender early detection of crashes and prompt response to trauma victims.
He explained that the CCTV Cameras would be installed at strategic points to enable the medical personnel effect swift response to accident victims, while the programme is scheduled to begin next year with the establishment of a centre at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
The programme, which he said is capital intensive, would include provision of ambulances, food facilities and training of rescue personnel.
Dr Ukpong however, hinted that skeletal services have begun at the Ibom Specialist Hospital, while a new consortium to take over the management of the quaternary hospital has been sourced. He also said that rehabilitation work has commenced at the Methodist Hospital, Ituk Mbang.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Charles Udoh had told journalists that, the meeting afforded SEC members the opportunity to assess the performance of the state government in 2017 and to also set targets for the incoming year.
He said that, the Council was satisfied with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under Mr Victor Antai, for taking tourism to enviable heights with the successful hosting of Arts Exhibition, Orange September, Ukapisua Carnival which culminated in the Street Groove and the Mega Beach Party held at Ibeno beach among others.
Mr Antai also commended the efforts of the state administration in the promotion of tourism and reaffirmed his commitment to make the state a tourists’ destination.
