Benin monarch says culture, tradition possess roadmap peace

Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare 11

The Oba of Benin, HRM Oba Ewuare II says culture and tradition should be exploited for conflict resolution options to promote peace and security in the Nigerian society.

The monarch stated this when he received in his Palace a delegation from the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria led by the Secretary of the Council, Alhaji Umoru Jafaru.

The Oba of Benin stressed the need for people to respect African culture and tradition, which he said has been used to promote peace and security right from the Pre-Colonial Era.

The Omo N’Oba pointed out that things started to change with the coming of the Colonialists and Modern Civilization, which has resulted in anti-social behavior prevalent among the people.

Oba Ewuare II while commending the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria for the plan to organize cultural festivals to sensitize Nigerians on the need for them to embrace peace, however advised against paying lip service to culture and tradition.

He said he plans to support any plan that will promote culture and tradition, and agreed in principle to support the proposed cultural festival by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria pending when he would receive a formal proposal to that effect.

Alhaji Jafaru, at the palace said they were there to inform the Oba of Benin about the proposed cultural festival and seek his Royal blessings and support.

Alhaji Jafaru said his group would organize a National Cultural Festival for Peace and Security in November, this year to sensitize Nigerians on the need to embrace peace and showcase Nigeria’s rich culture and traditions.
