Biggest amounts overpaid by clubs during the transfer window revealed

Anyone in their right mind will tell you that virtually every footballer is overpriced.

The amount of money that clubs spend on players is nothing short of ludicrous for people just to kick a ball.

And no-one overpays for players more than Premier League clubs, according to a new study by the CIES Football Observatory.

The study has calculated the estimated worth of footballers and compared it with their actual transfer value.

They estimate the transfer value by looking at a player’s age, position, contract situation, international status, experience, performance and the level of competition the individual plays at.

Half of the top 20 worst transfers by value were made by Premier League clubs.

Here are the top five most overpaid transfers (all figures from CIES):

  1. Arda Turan (Barcelona) Overpaid by: £11million

The Turkish star swapped Atletico Madrid for another La Liga club this summer even though he can’t play until January due to Barcelona’s transfer ban.

At the age of 28, CIES valued him at £13.7m while his actual fee was £24.7m

  1. Angel Di Maria (Paris Saint-Germain) £11.1m

The Argentine left Manchester United after a disappointing spell at the club and PSG were willing to spend big money on him.

His value was estimated at £34.7m but he was sold for £45.8m

  1. Christian Benteke (Liverpool) £14.3m

Aston Villa finally cashed in on the Belgian attacker and seem to have done pretty good business.

The menacing forward was valued at £19.2m but Liverpool opted to pay around £33.5m.

  1. Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City) £19.4m

City spent an eye watering £53.9m on the 24-year-old Wolfsburg forward.

CIES believes he was only worth £34.5m meaning that City seriously overspent.

  1. Anthony Martial (Manchester United) £20.3m

In one of the most surprising deals of the summer, United paid a reported £36.4m to land a fairly unknown 19-year-old Frenchman.

And it seems that selling club Monaco got the deal of the summer as his true value was closer to £16m.

That means United paid more than double what he was worth…
