Buhari, Atiku sign Peace Accord; Pay tribute to Abdulsalami Abubakar Peace Committee

President Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the major opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have signed a peace accord in Abuja, the country’s capital.

At the signing ceremony, witnessed by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland and other dignitaries, both candidates thanked the leadership and members of the General Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee that organized the program pledging to abide by the letters and spirit of the accord.

President Buhari in his address at the event, said “I want to thank General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Chairman of the National Peace Committee and all his members for the hard work they have put into ensuring that our Elections are peaceful. Your great work contributed significantly in shaping the 2015 elections and we are sure that the same impact will be felt in these elections.”

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in his address, also paid tribute to the Committee thus: “May I use this opportunity to renew my profound gratitude, firstly to my party, the PDP, and then to General Abdulsalami Abubakar and members of the Peace Committee for their tireless enthusiasm, dedication, and passion towards ensuring the success of this Peace Accord Process!”

The Presidential and National Assembly polls come up on Saturday, February 16, 2019 while the Governorship and State Assembly polls hold on Saturday, March 2, 2019 and it is hoped that the elections will be truly free, fair, transparent and violence-free and that the contestants and their supporters will abide by the letters and spirit of the Accord.
