He said the deceased would always remain a fountain of inspiration to Nigerians in life and death.
This was as Monguno was buried in Maiduguri, Borno State on Saturday.
A statement by Buhari’ s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, quotes the President as making the submission in a condolence message delivered on his behalf by a Federal Government delegation.
The delegation led by the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Munguno (retd.), attended the deceased’s burial in Maiduguri, Borno State on Saturday.
Buhari said the former minister ranked among the most respected public figures in Nigeria while in office and in private retirement life.
The President recalled that in the course of his public service as a parliamentarian and a Minister of Air Force and Internal Affairs during the First Republic, the late Monguno “had left behind a legacy of untainted and unblemished career.”
He said the deceased should be emulated by Nigerian leaders at all levels.
“A man’s greatest pride is to leave behind a good name and the late Monguno had achieved that desire,” the President said.
Buhari, who said it would take volumes to narrate Monguno’s sterling virtues, extended his condolences to the family, the government and the people of Borno State over the death.
The government delegation included the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu; the Minister of the Federal Capital Terrirory, Mohammed Bello; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
