CAF Champions League: Nigerian clubs Enyimba FC, Remo Stars suffer preliminary round elimination

Nigerian representatives to the 2023/2024 CAF Champions League have suffered preliminary round elimination.

This follows the conclusion of second leg games at the Enyimba Stadium and Remo Stars Stadium respectively August 26, 2023.

For Enyimba FC, a 0-0 second leg result vs Libya’s Al Ahli Benghazi confirmed their elimination with a 3-4 aggregate score from the first leg.

The Coach Finidi George tutored Elephants toiled in vain in search of a goal to overturn the deficit and progress but there was no breakthrough and so they head out of the continent.

Remo Stars Sports Club then joined Enyimba FC out with a 2-3 penalty shoot-out loss to Ghana’s Medeama FC in Ikenne.

The Sky Blues won the second leg courtesy of a 73rd minute own goal to level aggregate score at 1-1 and force penalties to determine the winner.

It was the visiting Medeama FC who emerged victorious from the shootouts 2-3 to reach the second qualifying round where Horoya FC awaits.

The exit of Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League means an extension of the country’s wait for continental glory, the last in 2004 during the glory days of Enyimba International FC.
