CAF Champions League: Nigeria’s Rivers United suffer embarrassing loss in Cairo as group stage begins

Nigerian club Rivers United opened their CAF Champions League group-stage campaign on a disappointing note, falling 3–0 to holders Pyramids FC at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

The Pride of Rivers kept things tight in the first half, containing the defending champions and heading into the break level. But once the second half resumed, the game swung completely in favour of the Egyptians.

Pyramids’ striker Ahmed Atef punished Rivers United’s defensive errors with a ruthless hat-trick, scoring all three goals in quick succession and putting the contest beyond the Nigerian team.

The heavy defeat means Rivers United have plenty to fix as the group stage progresses. The Port Harcourt side will now look to recover swiftly and get their Champions League campaign back on track in their next match.
