Code For Africa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering informed societies has advocated the creation of policies to enable Artificial Intelligence (AI) Agency owners pay for information generated by African organizations.

Mr. Martins Ayotunde, Code For Africa’s Media Trainer stated this on Tuesday during a webinar which focused on “How Journalists Can Detect and Verify AI-Generated Content.

Ayotunde, answering a question from a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent in Abia said AI agencies in Europe pay for using content created by media organizations abroad.

He, however said that AI organizations do not pay for content sourced from Africa and African media organizations because African countries lack policies that should control AI uses.

The monthly two-days Webinar, for the month of September, had its theme as “Surviving the AI Information Age”.

Ayotunde, while giving “An Overview of AI-generated Synthetic Media” said that “Synthetic Media” which is the opposite of “Organic Media”, is anything created using the AI media.

He lamented that some people fear using AI for many reasons but noted that it is how AI is used that is the problem but not just the use of it.

Ayotunde stressed that journalists today need to know how to use AI in their jobs because it makes tedious jobs like transcription of recordings and complex data generation easier.

He noted that journalists could detect fake content that is passed off as original as it obtains in audio and video clips if they were to be trained on the uses of AI.

The Media Trainer, however, warned journalists and other users to be very careful while using AI because “it hallucinates a lot” and does not know how to say it does not know something about a subject matter.

Code For Africa, Africa’s largest Indigenous nonprofit dedicated to fostering informed societies, is hosting the monthly webinar to equip African journalists and other participants with knowledge of AI tools needed to survive the AI information age.
