Corruption allegations: Why Osinbajo is offering to waive his immunity – Justice Olateru-Olagbegi

Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN)’s offer to waive his constitutional immunity to prove his innocence of allegations of corrupt practices leveled against him has been described as an indication of how far he can go to preserve his integrity when it is called to question.

Hon. Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi, an Emeritus Judge, told Global Patriot Newspapers, GPNEWS, in New Jersey, United States of America, US, that the offer is the action of a man who prides his honor and integrity far above the mundane trappings of office.

There had been a rash of insinuations and allegations against the person and office of the Vice President, especially by a former officer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Timi Frank alleging that the Prof. Osinbajo collected N90billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for the 2019 election in the South West geo-political zone of the country.

Reacting, Prof. Osinbajo had declared via his official Twitter handle thus:

“In the past few days, a spate of reckless and malicious falsehoods have been peddled in the media against me by a group of malicious individuals.

“The defamatory and misleading assertions invented by this clique had mostly been making the social media rounds anonymously.

“I have today instructed the commencement of legal action against two individuals, one Timi Frank and another Katch Ononuju, who have put their names to these odious falsehoods.

“I will waive my constitutional immunity to enable the most robust adjudication of these claims of libel and malicious falsehood.”

Justice Olateru-Olagbegi said that the Vice President, with whom he worked closely when he (Osinbajo) was Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of Lagos State, “prides his honor so highly that he will not spare anything to ensure that it is preserved.”

He said that he, as a Judge (with some of his other colleagues) and Osinbajo as Attorney General collaborated in the area of Law Reform of the Civil Procedure Rules of Lagos State, stressing that the Vice President contributed a great deal to administration of justice in Lagos state and that at no time was his integrity called to question.

Justice Olateru-Olagbegi said that Professor Osinbajo’s offer should, therefore, not be looked at from the narrow prism of whether he can or cannot waive his immunity but should be seen as an illustration of the level of condemnation that he has for those peddling the vile allegations.

Pointing out that some people have little or no honor and would therefore go to any length to try to destroy others, Olateru-Olagbegi insisted that Professor Osinbajo is not an ordinary Nigerian, but a brilliant, honest, energetic and humble personality who says it as it is, stressing that the Vice President represents a rare breed of human being who is a great asset to Nigeria and any nation he finds himself in.

Justice Olateru-Olagbegi who is presently a Legal Consultant, Arbitrator, Private Mediator and Neutral Evaluator, said he could not comprehend why the Vice President could so suddenly become the subject of such despicable rumors, noting, however, that he identifies with those who say it is a deliberate ploy to malign his character and reduce his presidential succession value.

According to Olateru-Olagbegi, an Owo, Ondo State Prince, the allegations against Osinbajo cannot, but be “a mischievous ploy to dent his image because of succession politics,” insisting that the effort will fail woefully.
